Q: What inspired you to write this book Coffee Break Companion?
A: I had been writing the stories for a long time before I decided to put them together as a book. I have major surgery in September 2017 and decided after that to go for one of my dreams and publish a book.
Q: Is there anything in the stories that relates to your own life?
A: Many of the stories came about whilst I was struggling with mental health problems, a lot of them feature aspects of my own experiences fictionalised. It was very therapeutic to write this way.
Q: What have been your favourite moments of being a published author?
A: The best part is when other people love your stories. Until strangers read them and love them you never truly believe that your writing is any good, and especially when people find them inspirational for their own experiences with mental health, that feels really good.
Q: What motivates you to keep writing?
A: The encouragement I have received from people has been a major factor, people asking when the next book will be out and saying they can’t wait to read more is the greatest motivation of all.
Q: How do you come up with the plots of your books?
A: Real life experiences are a main contributor, but I also think of ideas all the time because of a song I heard, a picture I saw or something I heard, I use writing prompts too, I will start by writing a 100 word short story from a prompt, but often I can see the potential for something more so will then expand it into a longer short story.
Q: Are there any characters that have felt so real to you that you feel you could keep writing about them?
A: Jess, the main character in Hide and Seek, the longer story at the end of Coffee break Companion. I think I could definitely write more about her, although that might prove a challenge given what happens in Hide and Seek…
Q: If you could choose to have an exclusive book club with three authors, dead or alive, who would you choose and what would be your ideal discussion to have with them?
A: Ooh, that’s a tough one, so many great authors to choose from. I think I’d like a book club with Max Brookes, Daniel Suarez and Andy Weir as I’d like to discuss combining hard sci-fi, digital technology and zombies in an epic space adventure!
Q: What books do you currently have on your bedside table?
A: Neil Gaiman – Norse Mythology, my current read; The Encyclopaedia of Mythology – Arthur Cotterell, for some research;
Q: Lastly, something fun that our readers might not know about you?
A: I once auditioned for the X-Factor and got through three rounds of auditions, all of which are before you get to being on TV at all, so I know a few behind the scenes secrets of the process…
Blurb: Grab that cup of coffee (or tea if you prefer), maybe add a splash of something stronger, settle down and enjoy your break with this gripping collection of flash fiction and poetry that will send shivers down your spine.
